The World Series is now set and will start today, October 24th 2017. The National League Pennant winners, the Los Angeles Dodgers, will face off against the American League Pennant winners, the Houston Astros.
The Dodgers have home field advantage thanks to having 104 wins vs. the Astros’ 101 wins. Continue reading
The Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season is over, and now the playoffs begin with the wild card games.
In the American League, the Minnesota Twins travel to the Bronx to take on the New York Yankees. The Twins finished in second place in the American League Central Division with a record of 85 wins and 77 losses, while the Yankees finished in second place in the American League East with a record of 91 wins and 71 losses.
In the National League, the Colorado Rockies travel to Phoenix to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rockies finished with a record of 87 wins and 75 losses, while the Diamondbacks finished with a record of 93 wins and 69 losses. Both teams represent the National League West Division.
Look for both visiting teams to win their games and move on the the Divisional Series.

QUESTION: Owners in my building have placed leaflets on each unit’s door handle, advertising a condominium community website. One of the directors has been seen removing the leaflets. Can he do this?
ANSWER: The leaflets were obviously placed on the door handles for the benefit of the unit occupants. Removal of the leaflets should only be by the unit occupants or by the director if the board passed a resolution. The resolution would appear to be necessary even if the declaration or rules prohibited the attachment of anything to the door handles.

QUESTION: One of our directors submitted his resignation and it was accepted by resolution of the board. The resigned director now wants to return and complete his term. I believe that when a director resigns, he is out — unless voted back in by the owners at the annual general meeting. Am I correct?
ANSWER: Almost. The resigned director could be voted back onto the board by the owners. But the board could also resolve to appoint the director to fill the vacancy created by his resignation until the next AGM. The board, however, could not resolve that the director will complete his original term if that term would extend beyond the next AGM.
Today, August 19th 2017, the Canadian National Exhibition (C.N.E.) celebrated the 96th Warriors’ Day Parade.
The Parade started at 10:30 a.m. at the Princes’ Gate, at the east end of the CNE grounds, and continued past the Direct Energy Centre, before turning south just south BMO Field.

As today is Sir John Graves Simcoe Day in Ontario, I would like to discuss the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1791 to 1796. Of course Upper Canada would later become the Province of Ontario.
Born in Cotterstock England in 1752, Simcoe would be educated at Eton and spent one year at Oxford. He joined the 35th Regiment of Foot, as an ensign, in 1770. He purchased a captaincy in the 40th Regiment of Foot and was injured in battle during the American Revolution. He was responsible for a successful battle in the battle of Crooked Billet.
He became Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada in 1791 when the British Government created the Province of Upper Canada out of land around the Great Lakes that stayed part of the British Empire after the American Revolution. Simcoe would see to the building of two major roads: Yonge Street (named after Sir George Yonge then the Minister of War), and Dundas Street (named after Henry Dundas, later the 1st Viscount Melville.) Originally built for defensive purposes, later both streets served to help settlement Upper Canada, and as trading routes. Continue reading

QUESTION: My unit has one parking spot which is large enough for my car and my motorcycle. The manager advises that I must remove one since the declaration refers to a parking spot for “a” motorized vehicle. The board interprets “a” to mean one. If there’s room, is it not reasonable that I be allowed to park both vehicles?
ANSWER: You may be correct that parking both vehicles is reasonable. A declaration prohibition, however, need not be reasonable in order to be enforceable. “A” motorized vehicle indicates one vehicle only.
Veteran stage and screen actor Robert Hardy has passed away at 91.
Mr. Hardy was known for his appearance in the television series All Creatures Great and Small, Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter movies, and appearing as Sir Winston Churchill in several television series. Continue reading
Gerry Hyman has another article for the Toronto Star. Let’s discuss a couple of the questions:
QUESTION: Our property manager wants all owners to sign for any correspondence received from the board or management. If an owner refuses to give an electronic signature — using a device installed for parcels delivered by Canada Post — the correspondence will not be delivered. There is no rule requiring owners to provide such signatures. Is this valid?
ANSWER: The correspondence could not include mailed letters as those will be delivered by Canada Post to the owners — management must not interfere with those deliveries.
A decision to withhold correspondence not signed for must be made by the board, and not by management. It would not be in the board’s interest if correspondence, such as a requirement that an owner comply with the rules, is not received by the owner.
If the correspondence is notice of an owners’ meeting, that meeting will not be properly called if some of the owners do not receive notice.

Happy 150th Birthday, Canada!!!
Today, July 1st 2017 marks the 150th birthday for the Dominion of Canada since Confederation on July 1st, 1867.
Confederation was created thanks to the hard work of many people, and helped to create the Canada we know today.
On July 1st, 1867, three British colonies: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (the combined colonies of Upper and Lower Canada.)
Other provinces and territories were added over the years: Manitoba (1870), Northwest Territories (1870), British Columbia (1871), Prince Edward Island (1873), Yukon Territory (1898), Alberta (1905), Saskatchewan (1905), Newfoundland and Labrador (1949), and Nunavut (1999.)
So, Happy 150th Birthday, Canada! And Happy Dominion Day!
