Happy New Year/Year-in-Review

It’s now January 1st, 2025 – Happy New Year, everyone!

2024 flew by. Many things occurred during the year. Let’s take a look at some highlights:

January:

In January, I tried out the black and white setting on my camera: Random Pictures from a Recent Walk, I saw my first robin of 2024, Ethiopia announces a deal with Somaliland over the port of Berbera, and Ethiopia’s eventual recognition of Somaliland’s independence – the first country to do so, and Margrethe II abdicated as Queen of Denmark after 52 years on the Throne.

February:

In February, I went on a quick trip to London.

March:

In March, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney passed away, the City of Toronto turned 190, former Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston turned 80. Former Ontario Attorney General of Ontario and Chief Justices of Ontario Roy McMurtry passed away at 91. and Toronto’s Subway Turned 70.

I also caught the March 20th departure of VIA Rail’s flagship train The Canadian departing Toronto’s Union Station for Vancouver’s Pacific Central station:

April:

In April, Newfoundland and Labrador celebrated 75 years since joining Confederation. I captured some early springtime pictures, and famed conductor Sir Andrew Davis passed away at 80.

May:

In May, Alice Munro passed away at 92. Unfortunately, her legacy would be brought into question after her death.

June:

In June, the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup – beating out the Edmonton Oilers in the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals, the world celebrated 80th Anniversary of D-Day Landings, and the Euros 2024 began.

July:

In July, Canada celebrated 157 years of Confederation, and Spain beats England in the 2024 Euros Finals.

August:

In August, Canadian Succeeded at the 2024 Summer Olympics, the Canadian National Exhibition (C.N.E.) opened for another year, and the 103rd Warriors’ Day took place on August 17th.

September:

In September, James Earl Jones passed away at 93, Dame Maggie Smith passed away at 89, and Pete Rose passed away at 83.

October:

In October, New Zealand won the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, and Hurricane Milton became the fifth most intense hurricane in the Atlantic Basin.

November:

In November, Germany celebrated 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, we remembered the sacrifices of our military personnel on Remembrance Day, the Toronto Argonauts won the Grey Cup for the 19th time, and I made another quick trip to London.

December:

In December, the 2024 Etobicoke Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade took place. Team Canada Announces World Juniors Team, and Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 crashed in Kazakhstan killing 38 of the 67 people on the plane. On December 29th, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100.

Events that took place over the course of the year included the continuance of the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war. Both have demonstrated that humanity still hasn’t progressed far and we still use war and death over peaceful discussions.
