September 9th, 2015 will go down as the day Queen Elizabeth II becomes the longest reigning Monarch in the history of Canada and 15 other realms. Her Majesty’s reign surpasses the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria who reigned for 63 years and 216 days.
Her Majesty ascended the throne of Canada on February 6th, 1952 when her father, King George VI, passed away.
Her Majesty’s full title in Canada is Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.
On her 21st birthday, as Princess Elizabeth, Her Majesty made the following commitment:
I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.
As Queen of Canada, she would sign the necessary laws to repatriate the Canadian Constitution in 1982. She would also celebrate her Silver Jubilee in 1977, her Golden Jubilee in 2002, and her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
As such, let’s celebrate Her Majesty setting a new record.
God Save the Queen of Canada.
