Blue Jays Blow Early Lead to Dodgers

The Toronto Blue Jays lost Tuesday night 10-9 to the Los Angeles Dodgers after leading 8-3 after 6 innings.  The winning pitcher was Brandon League (4-3), the losing pitcher was Darren Oliver (3-2), while Kenley Jansen picked up his 12 save of the season.

Prior to the game the Blue Jays’ players held a players only meeting for an one hour and 10 minutes.  Unfortunately, they did not work out how to fix their defensive problems.  They gave up three homeruns including a three run homerun by Dodgers First Baseman Adrian Gonzalez to make it 9-8.  Hanley Ramirez then stepped up to the plate and hit a solo homerun to make it 10-8.  The Jays gave up 13 hits and four walks plus a hit batsman. 2013-2014 Maple Leafs Season

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced their schedule for the 2013-2014 NHL Season.  This will be the first season for the Leafs in the new NHL alignment.  Under the new alignment, the Leafs remain in the Eastern Conference, but will play in the new ‘Atlantic Division.’  The other four teams that played in the Northeast Division with the Leafs, the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres,  Montreal Canadiens, and Ottawa Senators, will be joined by the Detroit Red Wings (who along with the Columbus Blue Jackets moved to the Eastern Conference), the Florida Panthers, and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The new schedule includes two games (one home game and one away game) against each of the 14 teams in the Western Conference (28 games), three games against each of the eight teams in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference (24 games), five games against the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens (10 games) and four games against each of the remaining divisional teams (20 games.) TDSB Throws Out Old Books

The Toronto Star has reported that the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has thrown out numerous books that are deemed to be old, or contact ‘inappropriate’ or do not meet their ‘equity policy’.

Just because a book is old does not mean that the book is no longer relevant, especially if it contains valuable information that students might need.  Unless the book is badly damaged, then the books should retained for reference at least. Continue reading

Errors Hurt Jays in Loss to Tigers

Last night the Toronto Blue Jays lost 6-2 to the defending American League Pennant winners, the Detroit Tigers.  Errors contributed to the problem as the Tigers scored five unearned runs off the Blue Jays.  Josh Johnson picked up the loss, while Max Scherzer improved to 13-0 this season.

The problem for the Blue Jays started in the 2nd Inning again.  Prince Fielder hit an infield single off Johnson’s glove, which should have been an easy play for him to make.  Victor Martinez then stepped up to the plate and hit a routine ground ball right through Emilio Bonifacio’s legs at 2nd base.  Bonifacio was charged with an error and left runners at 1st and 2nd with no one out.  Jhonny Peralta then hit a single, scoring Prince Fielder.

After Johnson got Andy Dirks to strikeout and Omar Infante to fly out, Alex Avila hit a three run homerun to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Continue reading

Renting out Units

Gerry Hyman has a new article for the Toronto Star.  Let’s discuss some of the questions brought up in it.

QUESTION:  Our declaration provides that units may only be occupied as single family residences and we have rules setting out rental requirements. We don’t seem able to be able to achieve enforcement in order to prevent short-term rentals. What should we do?

ANSWER:  The single family provision in the declaration will not prevent owners from renting their units on a short-term basis, provided each rental is to only one family. If your corporation’s declaration or a rule does not provide for a reasonable minimum rental period, such as one year or six months, a rule to that effect may be passed. Such rules have received court approval as reasonable way of preventing transitory or hotel-type rentals inconsistent with the intended use of the units. Mediation pursuant to the Condominium Act may be required with an owner who fails to comply. Should the offending owner not agree in the mediation to end the offending rentals, the matter will proceed to arbitration. The arbitrator will render a binding decision and may order the offending owner to pay some or all of the corporation’s legal and arbitration costs.

The problem here is that the Condominium Act does not specifically dictate the minimum length of rentals, although Section 83 deals with the minimum requirements of a rental: Continue reading

Munenori Kawasaki Demoted to Triple-A

In order to make room for the returning José Reyes, the Toronto Blue Jays have optioned Munenori Kawasaki back to their Triple-A team the Buffalo Bisons.

Kawasaki provided a lot of energy for the Blue Jays at shortstop while Reyes was on the disabled list recovering from an ankle injury.  Blue Jays’ fans will likely have to wait until the September 1st when the rosters expand to 40 men before we see Kawasaki in Toronto again.  However, let’s see what he did in his 60 games for the Blue Jays: Continue reading

Rajai Davis & The Blue Jays Walk-off Baltimore

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-6 tonight with a walk-off base hit by Rajai Davis in the 9th inning.  The Blue Jays have now won their last 9 straight ballgames to get back to .500 with a record of 36-36.

R.A. Dickey started for the Blue Jays and went 6 innings, plus two batters in the 7th inning.  He gave up 6 runs, including a three run homerun by Chris Davis (6th inning), and solo homeruns from J.J. Hardy (2nd inning), and Ryan Flaherty (7th inning.) Continue reading

Do We Need A Pickering Airport?

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty has announced that the Federal Government is going ahead with the building of a new airport in Pickering.  However, the question is whether or not we really need another airport in the G.T.A. when we already have John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, Lester B. Pearson Airport in Mississauga, and the Billy Bishop Airport on Toronto Island.  Plus there is Buttonville Municipal Airport.  I personally do not think that we need another airport.

Let’s see how we could handle the transportation demands:

1)  Billy Bishop airport.  Porter already handles many short range locations already including Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax, Chicago, and New York, Moncton, Quebec City, Mont Tremblant, St. John’s Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins, Windsor, Washington, and Boston.  Season service includes Myrtle Beach, and Burlington Vermont.  This allows people to get to some short-mid range locations.  Billy Bishop should be retained for mid range routes.

2)  Lester B. Pearson airport handles all different routes from short runs (to Ottawa and Montreal for example) to International flights.  There are two terminals, and Pearson can certainly be retained to handle the needs of long distance flights.

3)  Hamilton airport.  The airport in Hamilton can be utilized to take some pressure off Pearson for many domestic and North American flights. Continue reading
