On October 8th, the Metropolitan Opera opened their 2016-2017 Live in HD series with the new production of Wagner’s epic Tristan und Isolde.  It was both wonderful and confusing.

The production stars Stuart Skelton as Tristan, Nina Stemme as Isolde, René Pape as King Marke, Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne, and Evgeny Nikitin as Kurneval.  The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra was under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle.  The director is Mariusz Treliński, with sets by Boris Kudlička. 2016 MLB Wild Card Games

It took baseball until the final day of the regular season (October 2nd, 2016) to determine the teams who would qualify for the two wild card spots in both leagues, as well as who would be hosting the wild games.

In the American League (A.L.), the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox, allowing them to claim the first wild card spot and thus will be hosting the Baltimore Orioles, who finished third in the A.L. East, on Tuesday.  The Blue Jays won the A.L. East title last year, while Baltimore did not.  At the time of writing, neither team as announced who will be their starting pitcher.  The winner of this game will face off against the Texas Rangers. Condominium Could Amend the By-laws

Gerry Hyman as another article for the Toronto Star.  Let’s discuss a couple of questions that were brought up:

QUESTION:  Our board recently discovered that owners have been electing five directors when the bylaws allowed for three. A lawyer’s letter has been received advising that the two directors elected at the last annual general meeting were not actually elected due to the three-director limit. Is that correct? Do we have a legally constituted board?

Condominiums Need Facilities Agreement

Gerry Human has another article for the Toronto Star.  Let’s look at two of the questions asked:

QUESTION:  Our townhouse condo has two condominium corporations and two boards of directors. But we don’t have an agreement setting out how we share expenses like hydro, water and roads — which will soon require replacement. The boards don’t hold joint meetings, so questions about maintenance, repair and cost-sharing remain unanswered. Does the Condominium Act address a situation like this?

ANSWER:  A condo-builder, in a case like this, would normally prepare a shared-facilities agreement and have the two corporations sign it while they are still controlled by the developer. The Condominium Act does not cover either the need for this agreement or what happens when there isn’t one.

As today is Sir John Graves Simcoe Day in Ontario, I would like to discuss the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1791 to 1796.  Of course Upper Canada would later become the Province of Ontario.

Born in Cotterstock England in 1752, Simcoe would be educated at Eton and spent one year at Oxford.  He joined the 35th Regiment of Foot, as an ensign, in 1770.  He purchased a captaincy in the 40th Regiment of Foot and was injured in battle during the American Revolution.  He was responsible for a successful battle in the battle of Crooked Billet.

He became Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada in 1791 when the British Government created the Province of Upper Canada out of land around the Great Lakes that stayed part of the British Empire after the American Revolution.  Simcoe would see to the building of two major roads:  Yonge Street (named after Sir George Yonge then the Minister of War), and Dundas Street (named after Henry Dundas, later the 1st Viscount Melville.)  Originally built for defensive purposes, later both streets served to help settlement Upper Canada, and as trading routes.
