80th Anniversary of VE Day

Today, May 8th, 2025, marks the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day.)

On this day in 1945, the Second World War (WWII) came to an end with the surrender of Nazi Germany after almost six year of fighting.

WWII began in Europe on September 1st, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The war in Europe would last until the Germans surrendered on May 7th, 1945 with hostilities ending the next day, on May 8th, 1945.

During WWII, over 60 million people would pass away from the war effort, and many millions would become displaced.

The world would change for much of Europe after VE Day, with communism taking over in much of eastern Europe until the end of the 1980s.

Today, we mark the end of WWII in Europe, but also remember the losses of the millions who died during the war, holocaust, etc.
