Omar Sharif is Dead at 83

It has been announced that Oscar nominated actor Omar Sharif has passed away.

Mr. Sharif became famous for starring in such movies as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago.  Other movies included The Fall of the Roman Empire, Funny Girl, The Pink Panther Strikes Again (uncredited), Juggernaut, and Monsieur Ibrahim.

Mr. Sharif received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Sherif Ali in Lawrence of Arabia, as well as two Golden Globes for the role (Best Supporting Actor, and Best Newcomer.)  He would also win a Golden Globe for best actor in Doctor Zhivago.  Then there as a César Award for best actor in Monsieur Ibrahim.

Mr Sharif was born Michel Demitri Chaloub in Alexandria, Egypt.  He earned a degree in  mathematics and physics from the University of Cairo before receiving training as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England.

Mr. Sharif was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and passed away following a heart attack.
