The Canadian Opera Company (COC) has announced its 2015-2016 season. All performances will take place at their opera house, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
The season is a mix of familiar works, along with some less familiar works, and a world première. A total of six operas are being performed over the course of the season.
The season breaks down as follows:
La Traviata, by Giuseppe Verdi. The production is directed by Arin Arbus, with sets by Riccardo Hernandez, and conducted by Marco Guidarini. The production will be using a double case consisting of Ekaterina Siurina and Joyce El-Khoury (Violetta), Charles Castronovo and Andrew Haji (Alfredo), and Quinn Kelsey and James Westman (Germont.) La Traviata runs from October 8th to November 6th, 2015.
Triple Bill: Pyramus and Thisbe by Barbara Monk Feldman, and two Claudio Monteverdi operas, Lamento D’Arianna and Il combattimento di Tancredi eClorinda. Pyramus and Thisbe is a world premiere. The case includes Krisztina Szabó (Thisbe, Arianna, and Clorinda), Phillip Addis (Pyramus, and Tancredi), and Owen McCausland (Testo.) The triple bill is conducted by Johannes Debus. The production is directed by Christopher Alden, with sets by Paul Steinberg. The production runs October 20th t0 November 7th, 2015.
Siegfried by Richard Wagner. This is the same production that was performed as part of the COC’s complete Ring Cycle back in 2006 to celebrate the opening of the Four Seasons Centre. The prouduction is by François Girard, with sets by Michael Levine, and will be conducted by Johannes Debus. The casts includes Stefan Vinke (Siegfried), Christine Goerke (Brünnhilde), Alan Held (The Wanderer), Christopher Purves (Alberich), Maria Radner (Erda), Phillip Ens (Fafner), and Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke (Mime.) The production runs from January 23rd to February 14th, 2016.
The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The cast includes Josef Wagner (Figaro), Jane Archibald (Susanna), Erin Wall (Countess), Russell Braun (Count), Emily Fons (Cherubino), Michael Colvin (Basilio), Robert Pomakov (Bartolo), Helene Schneiderman (Marcelina), and Doug MacNaughton (Antonio.) The production is directed by Claus Guth, with sets and costumes by Christian Schmidt. All but two performances are conducted by Johannes Debus with Jordan de Souza conducting the two other performances. The production runs February 4th to 27th, 2016.
Carmen by Georges Bizet. The production is directed by Joel Ivany with sets by Michael Yeargan. The conductor is Paolo Carignani. The production will use a double cast which consists of Clémentine Margaine and Anita Rachvelishvili (Carmen), Russell Thomas and David Pomeroy (Don José), Christian Van Horn and Zachary Nelson (Escamillo), and Simone Osborne and Karine Boucher (Micaëla.) The production runs April 12th to May 15th, 2016.
Maometto II by Gioachino Rossini. Luca Pisaroni makes his COC debut in the title role of Maometto, and is joined by Leah Crocetto (Anna), Bruce Sledge (Erisso), and Elizabeth DeShong (Calbo.) The production is directed by David Alden, with sets and costumes by Jon Morrell. The production is directed by Harry Bicket. The production runs April 29th to May 14, 2015.
