Honouring Carlos Delgado

The Toronto Blue Jays will be honouring their former first baseman Carlos Delgado on July 21st, 2o13 when his name and number will be added to their ‘Level of Excellence’ prior to a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Before this day, I’d like to look at some of Carlos’ accomplishments during his career:

Carlos Delgado holds the following Blue Jays’ records:

In one Season:

  • Slugging Percentage: 0.664 in 2000
  • OPS: 1.134 in 2000
  • Most Doubles: 57 in 2000
  • Most Grand Slams: 3 in 1997
  • Most RBI: 145 in 2003
  • Extra Base Hits: 99

In his career as a Blue Jay:

  • Most Runs: 889
  • Slugging Percentage: 0.556
  • Doubles: 343
  • Home Runs: 336
  • RBI: 1,058
  • Walks: 827
  • OPS: 0.949
  • Total Bases: 2,786
  • Runs Created: 1,077
  • Extra Base Hits: 690
  • Times on Base: 2,362
  • Intentional Walks: 128
  • At Bats per HR: 14.9
  • Putouts: 10,333
  • Double Plays Turned: 1,044

He also holds some Blue Jays’ single game records:

  • 4 homeruns in a game (2003)
  • Total Bases (16) in a game (2003)

Carlos Delgado also holds the record for Puerto Rican players in homeruns (473) and RBI (1,512.)  He also became the fourth player in MLB history to hit at least 30 homeruns in 10 consecutive seasons.

Mr. Delgado appeared in two All Star games, both during his tenure with the Blue Jays, in 2000 and 2003.  He won the Silver Slugger Award 3 times (1999, 2000, and 2003) with the Blue Jays.  He was the recipient of the American League Hank Aaron Award in 2000, and was the 2003 American League RBI Champion.  He would go on to receive the Roberto Clemente award in 2006.

He deserves to be honoured by the Blue Jays.  So if you haven’t gotten a ticket for Sunday’s game to celebrate his achievements with the Blue Jays you better do so before they are all gone.
