Catherine O’Hara Passes Away at 71

Famed Canadian actress Catherine O’Hara has passed away at 71.

She came to fame in the television series Second City Television from 1976 to 1984. However, she is best remembered for her roles as the mother in Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), and as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek from 2015 to 2020.

Other movies include Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Bartok the Magnificent (1999), Chicken Little (2005), Over the Hedge (2006), Monster House (2006), Brother Bear 2 (2006), Where the Wild Things Are (2009), Frankenweenie (2012), The Addams Family (2019), Extinct (2021), Elemental (2023), and The Wild Robot (2024.)

Other television series include: Wayne and Shuster, The Studio, The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, Saturday Night Live, Married… with Children, and The Last of Us.

Ms. O’Hara received several awards during her career including two Emmy awards (10 nominations), a Golden Globe award (two nominations), seven Actor Award Nominations (two wins, with two possible), six ACTRA Awards (including one for Lifetime Achievement award), a Gemini Award (Earle Grey Award), and an Astra Award. In 2017, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

She was married to Bo Welch, and had two sons.

Ms. O’Hara passed away on January 30th, 2025.
