First Round of the MLB 2025 Playoffs Set

The first round of the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) playoffs are now set.

Six teams from both the American League (AL) and National League (NL) have qualified for the playoffs.

In the AL, the following teams secured a spot in the postseason:

  1. Toronto Blue Jays (94–68, AL East champions)
  2. Seattle Mariners (90–72, AL West champions)
  3. Cleveland Guardians (88–74, AL Central champions)
  4. New York Yankees (94–68)
  5. Boston Red Sox (89–73)
  6. Detroit Tigers (87–75)

In the NL, the following teams secured a post in the postseason:

  1. Milwaukee Brewers (97–65, NL Central champions)
  2. Philadelphia Phillies (96–66, NL East champions)
  3. Los Angeles Dodgers (93–69, NL West champions)
  4. Chicago Cubs (92–70)
  5. San Diego Padres (90–72)
  6. Cincinnati Reds (83–79)

The top two teams in each league receive a first round bye and will proceed straight to the Division Series round. With the best record in the MLB, the Brewers are guaranteed home field advantage throughout the postseason.

The wild card series run from September 30th to October 2nd in a best of three series. The team with the better record will host all games in the series.

In the AL, the Detroit Tigers will take on the Cleveland Guardians. Both teams represent the AL Central Division, with the Guardians the winners of the division. In the other series, the Boston Red Sox head to the Bronx to take on the New York Yankees. The Yankees claimed the first wild card spot by having a 5-8 record against the Toronto Blue Jays (both teams had an identical record.) Both teams are from the AL East.

In the NL, the Cincinnati Reds head to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers, the AL West division winners. In the second series, the San Diego Padres head for Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs.

The Blue Jays are making their fourth postseason appearance in six years, while the Yankees are making their eighth in the last nine years, and the Mariners won their division for the first time since 2001 (the longest drought in the majors between division titles.)

The Brewers are making their seventh trip to the postseason in eight years, while the Phillies are making their fourth straight appearance, and the Dodgers have made it to the postseason for 13 straight years – tied with the Yankees for the longest streak making it to the postseason.

This is the first time that both Ohio based teams (Cincinnati and Cleveland) have made it to the postseason in the same season.

This is the first postseason since 2016 not to feature the Houston Astros and the first since 2017 not to feature the Atlanta Braves.

Look for the Yankees, Tigers, Cubs, and Dodgers to win their series.
