Siegmund Nimsgern Has Passed Away

Famed German bass-baritone Siegmund Nimsgern has passed away at 85.

Mr. Nimsgern was born January 14th, 1940 in Sankt Wendel, Saarland, Germany. He made his operatic debut in 1967 in Saarbrücken with the Saarländisches Staatstheater.

He would go on to sing at Covent Garden, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. Between 1983 and 1986, he sang Wotan at the Bayreuth Festival.

Mr. Nimsgern would work with many conductors over his career including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Riccardo Chailly, Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnányi, Carlo Maria Giulini, Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber, Erich Leinsdorf, Jean Martinon, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Georg Solti, and Horst Stein.

Mr. Nimsgern passed away on September 14th, 2025 at the age of 85.
