Today, August 10th 2025, marks the 65th Anniversary of the enactment of the Canadian Bill of Rights.
While some basic human rights had already been implied over the years, this was the first legislation specifically applying human rights at the federal level in Canadian history.
The main two weakness of the Bill of Rights were that it was merely a piece of legislation that could be amended just like any other piece of legislation passed by Parliament and that it did not apply to Provincial legislation.

While the Bill of Rights has never been revoked, 17 years later the Charter of Rights and Freedoms would be established through the implementation of current Canadian Constitution thus entrenching our rights into the Constitution and applying them to Provincial legislation as well.
This date has become an important day in Canadian history – the legal rights and freedoms we have in Canada were first enshrined in law 65 years ago today..
